History and Infrastructure
The settlement was built in the beggining of the 20th century by fishermen from Sellia who stayed in this area. In the first census there were only 6 residents. Nowadays more than 200 permanent residents live in Plakias. In summer thousands of tourists live in Plakias.
In Plakias you will find pharmacies, big supermarkets, a doctor, every kind of tourist business. You can enjoy walking the pleasant routes, cycling, riding, diving, climbing and trying every kind of water sports.
You can get to Plakias either by your own car in half an hour or by public transport from Rethymno in regular bus service.
What you can do in Plakias
The walks in paths with rare flora and fauna is one of the activities that are offered in this area. There are levels of difficulty as well as professionals who can make you part of their team.
Cycling is a sport that is offered in Plakias since there are many wonderful routes in the nature along the sea. There are agencies in the center of the area in which you can rent a bike.
In the area there is a Horse Riding Center that offers the opportunity both to children and adults to learn or just to ride a horse or a donkey.
Of course in a place with so many beautiful beaches the water sports are famous. On the windy days you can do windsurfing or just surfing while the rest of the days you can choose from a variety of activities.
