We are just 1500 meters far from the center of Plakias in our own building. There is free space on the left and right and the sea is in front of us.
 
Behind our building there is the coastal road that leads to Souda beach or to the smaller and nearer beach called Fotinari.

Preveli beach
Preveli beach
The beach is in the south of Rethymno, in the end of Kourtaliotis george. The sandy beach of Preveli with the marvelous waterfalls that end up in the sea is in the end of the palm forest. The lake of Preveli is one of the most beautiful sights of the island. This place seems tropical and its definitely an excursion that will surprise you!
Preveli Monastery
The Preveli Monastery is 37 km in the south of Rethymno in a wonderful natural place, in the west slopes of the Great River (Koyrtaliotis gorge) and the palm forest of the area. It is consisted of two seperate monasteries the Kato Monastery Prodromou and the Piso Monastery Theologou,which are 1,7km far one another.
Kotsifou gorge
Kotsifou gorge is one of the most wonderful gorges in Crete and it's in the middle of Sellia and Myrthios. The road crosses between the narrow and sharp rocks creating not only a beautiful but also a wild place that is completed with a little church in a recess in the end of the gorge.
Kourtaliotis gorge
It's 22km in the south of Rethymno. It starts from Koxare, it follows the Kourtaliotis river and it ends up in the lake of the beautiful beach of Preveli. In the middle of the route you will meet the road that crosses the gorge. There is a parking and paths that leads to St. Nickolas church.

The history of this place

At first Plakias was a traditional village for fishermen

The settlement was created in the beggining of the 20th century by fishermen from Sellia who stayed in this area. In the first census there were only 6 residents.
